PEX cards can be added to digital wallets such as Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay. This allows the cardholder to make contactless payments at many merchants without needing to have the plastic version of the card. Allowing a cardholder to add PEX card to a digital wallet can be considered a permission to make a copy of the card. It may not be desirable under some circumstances to have multiple copies of the card. PEX offers controls at the business and individual cardholder levels for a higher level of security.

What is a digital wallet?

A digital wallet securely stores user’s payment card information in digital form. A digital wallet allows the user to use a smartphone, or smart device to carry out a contactless transaction in place of using an actual physical payment card. Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay are the most popular digital wallets.

How to enable digital wallet support

By default, digital wallet support is enabled. Administrators can disable this option for individual cardholders. To be eligible, a cardholder must:
  • Be registered on the PEX platform and have a valid email address. To determine if a cardholder is registered, please see this article.
  • Have a card in “active” status
To disable wallet support:
1
Use the main navigation to navigate to Cards and choose a card
2
Select the tab titled “Owner” under the card.
Note:If you do not see a tab titled “owner”, there is no eligible cardholder associated with the card. Please see “How to Send a Cardholder Invite” for details on aiding your cardholders with registration.
3
Choose “do not allow” under “Mobile wallet permission”:
  • Do not allow — attempts to add a PEX card to a digital wallet will always fail
  • Always allow (default) — the cardholder can add their PEX card to their digital wallet. PEX will approve the user’s attempt to add the card to their digital wallet, however identity verification may be required by the digital wallet provider

What is identity verification?

  • Identity verification is done to verify if the legitimate cardholder is attempting to add the PEX card to a digital wallet
  • It is typically done via one of two methods:
    • Email — a numerical code is sent to the email on file with PEX for the cardholder. This code must be entered into the digital wallet app when adding the card to the wallet.
    • Call center — the cardholder can call PEX and will be asked series of questions to verify the cardholder’s identity.
